Wow, time really flies, when you are having fun. And when important deadlines keep creeping up on you. That has been the whirlwind life of your new District Governor over the past few months. But as of July 1, 2017, the wait is over. Service in my new role has begun.
My main roles as DG fall into four categories... planner, organizer, cheerleader, and Rotarian.
Here is a recap of everything we have managed to accomplish this year:
International:
Global membership is about 1,227,368
35,000 + clubs
TRF celebrated its 100th anniversary
Only 37 new cases of polio were reported in 2016
Only 5 new polio cases in 2017
100th RI convention in Atlanta was capped off with $1.2 billion dollars in pledges from over 12 countries, the Gates Foundation and other major corporations
District 5870 has a unique method to help you become an initial (first-time) Paul Harris Fellow. Over the past six years, 692 Rotarians in 54 different clubs have taken advantage of this program, resulting in 389 PHFs. We hope to be able to help you, too.
The Jerry Johnson Testamentary Trust (the “Trust”) will generally match contributions of new cash made during the current Rotary year to the Annual Fund-SHARE on a 1-to-1 basis in amounts of $100 to $500 for any active Rotarian in District 5870 who is not yet a first time Paul Harris Fellow.
The Gates Foundation is matching all Rotarian Raised Polio Donations $2 for each $1 Contributed (Up to $50 Mil/Yr.) Our Rotary-wide 2017-18 Rotary Year Polio Fundraising Goal is $50 Million + the $2 for $1 Gates Foundation Match

The Dawson EAFK service club presented the program at the Rotary Club of Austin meeting along with Sir Randall and Lady Amber. Then the students celebrated the end of the year with their Rotary service coordinator Karen Waryas at Dawson Elementary with Balloons and party favors. This EAFK service club had a great year doing a community, local and international project making the world a better place.
In March, 2017 BMS Interact was one of four schools in the nation to receive a visit from Sandy Hook Promise during "Start with Hello" week. That was a tremendous honor and fueled empowerment across the BMS campus that was nothing short of awesome to watch.
This program did so well with the students that the "Start with Hello" is now slated to become a Burnet CISD District wide program during the 2017 - 2018 school year, led by BMS Interact and their advisers. One of the advisers, Sara Te, not only originally located the program but also decided to apply for the 2016 - 2017 Start with Hello national grand prize. They won! Read their story

The Rotary Club of Austin - Southwest (formerly Austin - Oak Hill) presented eight $1000 scholarships at Thursday’s, June 8, 2017 awards luncheon hosted at DK Marias Restaurant.
The Rotary Club of Austin – Southwest firmly ascribes to the sentiment expressed by the South African leader Nelson Mandela “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” In over 19 years, 150+ scholastic and vocational students have benefited from the club’s ‘Lend A Hand’ scholarship program.
This year’s recipients are working adults, many with families. Fields of study at Austin Community College and Baldwin Beauty School include vocational nursing, occupational therapy, chemical dependency counseling, dental hygiene, cosmetology and diagnostic imaging radiology. Theirs is a common theme of persistence and hard work, overcoming personal and systemic obstacles as they seek to better themselves and the lives of those close to them.
On Saturday June 17, 2017, members of the Rotary Club of Austin Southwest (formerly Austin-Oak Hill Rotary) and honored guests gathered to celebrate 35 Years carrying out Service as a Rotary Club and to install the board of officers for the 2017-2018 Rotary year.
