Realize it or not, we're now two-thirds of the way through the 2017-18 Rotary Year. It's been great! And continues to be so.
When I delivered my District Governor Official Visit speech to your club last summer/fall, I challenged each club - and each individual member - with a series of "DG One Initiatives" that I hoped District 5870 Rotarians would strive to achieve this year. I highlighted several I really wanted us to focus on, then added many other options for members and clubs to target as they felt appropriate. One success at a time.
District 5870 has a unique method to help you become an initial (first-time) Paul Harris Fellow. Over the past seven years, 1,277 Rotarians in 77 different clubs have taken advantage of this program, resulting in 646 PHFs. We hope to be able to help you, too.
The Jerry Johnson Testamentary Trust (the "Trust") will generally match contributions of new cash made during the current Rotary year to the Annual Fund-SHARE on a 1-to-1 basis in amounts of $100 to $500 for any active Rotarian in District 5870 who is not yet a first time Paul Harris Fellow.

On February 15th at Austin City Hall , District Governor Gene Holiman received an official Proclamation from Mayor Steve Adler proclaiming February 10th as Rotary Arbor Day. Rotary is being recognized for all of the amazing tree planting projects that were completed on February 10th throughout Austin and surrounding communities.
One of the most inspirational facets of the District 5870 District Conference each spring is the Celebration of Life Service on Sunday morning (May 6 this year) to remember those Rotarians in our district who have passed away during the current Rotary year (since July 1, 2017). A short synopsis of their Rotary life is read, a bell is sounded, then a yellow rose is presented to a member(s) of their club in attendance.
The Rotary Club of Austin worked together to package 22,000 thousand meals for Rise Against Hunger!! Thank you for your #ServiceAbove Self! Great job!!

It's been over 6 months since Hurricane Harvey and rebuilding efforts are still needed in the community of La Grange. Rotary Club of La Grange is worked hard to make a differrence - donated $2,500 towards the rebuilding of KC Hall. KC Hall was submerged in water due to the raising floods from Hurricane Harvey.
One of the greatest and most valuable projects our Rotary club does is Operation Vacation. Every month Ft. Hood selects a family to be honored with a free R&R weekend in Austin. The Austin Hotel Lodging Association Partners with the Rotary Clubs of Austin and Killeen and the County Line Restaurants to make this a fun, worry free and all expense paid event for the soldiers so they can have quality time with their families. This month we actually had two families: one hosted by The W Hotel and the other by the Hilton Austin Airport. Both families were treated to dinner at the County Line Saturday nite with all the trimmings. What a great way to thank our military for their service and let them know they are appreciated.
