What a great whirlwind these first three months have been for Kathleen and me! Since July 1 we have visited three-fourths of our District's clubs... been welcomed and entertained and informed... watched clubs in action... participated in many ceremonies... and helped clubs find their footing amid this very challenging weather-centric Autumn. I am convinced that Rotary District 5870 of Central Texas is much more than #1District Strong in name only.
Congratulations to the following clubs & groups for earning the 2016-2017 Presidential Citation: Austin Westlake, Killeen, Killeen Heights, Waco Sunrise, Temple South, Harker Heights, Austin Cosmopolitan, Marble Falls, Rotaract - Central Texas College, Interact - Burnet Middle School, Interact - Burnet High School, Interact - Fulmore Middle School and Rotary District 5870. Great job!!!
District 5870 has a unique method to help you become an initial (first-time) Paul Harris Fellow. Over the past six years, 1,207 Rotarians in 76 different clubs have taken advantage of this program, resulting in 619 PHFs. We hope to be able to help you, too.
The Jerry Johnson Testamentary Trust (the "Trust") will generally match contributions of new cash made during the current Rotary year to the Annual Fund-SHARE on a 1-to-1 basis in amounts of $100 to $500 for any active Rotarian in District 5870 who is not yet a first time Paul Harris Fellow.
Hart Early College Prep School Experiences Knights competing on Horseback through EAFK program!
Through a program called EAFK which is a character building program sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Northwest and North X Northeast, the students at Hart School in Austin learned from knights on horseback what skills it takes to be a real knight. The students will be learning the traits that knights possess and how they can live with those traits to become modern day knights and make right choices. Every six weeks, there is a knighting ceremony where each selected student from each class receives a medallion from a knight representing the current trait and then they become part of the Gallery of Champions at their school. This program teaches the students a code to live by and improves discipline at the school by at least thirty-five to fifty percent giving the teachers more valuable teaching time. The students and the Rotarians enjoyed watching the knights today.
Lakeway/Lake Travis and Bee Cave/Spicewood clubs have OFFICIALLY merged! They received the formal approval from Rotary International this past week. They are so excited to become one club.
"The merger between the two clubs will result in stronger support for existing service project efforts and improved awareness of Rotary impact within the local Lake Travis Community" says Donald Zielinski, former President, Rotary Club of BeeCave/Spicewood.
"Merging our clubs will allow us to support in the Lake Travis Community in a more robust fashion. Together we can be the center of service for our community", says Kris Shelstad, President, Rotary Club Lakeway/Lake Travis.

The Rotary Clubs of Austin and Killeen brought the Stricklin family in from Ft. Hood for a little R&R to thank them for their service to the USA. Sgt. 1st Class Sarah Stricklin and her husband are both in the Army and have a daughter 3 yrs. old and a son 19 mos. The Doubletree Guest Suites in Downtown Austin provided them with a complimentary stay with meals -thanks to the staff shown in the picture. The County Line on Hill provided a family style Texas BBQ dinner with all the trimming on Saturday nite. This is just a way for us to say thank you to our military for their sacrifices for us.

As part of the ongoing partnership with the Texas Ramp Project, on September 30, 2017, a group of volunteers from the Georgetown Rotary Club completed their thirty-fifth ramp build. These ramps accommodate the special needs of disabled and handicapped people who would otherwise be confined to their homes. The applicants must submit an application and show specific need for such a ramp.
This was just one of over two-hundred ramps built by various organizations under the guidance of Rotarian Larry Baird. With the leadership and guidance of Larry and George Lourigan, a group of Rotarians including Glenn Beck, Felix Boston, Brett Derning, Jim Deuser, Dave Kellermen, Denis Pepin and organizer Myra Page, this Pflugerville project was completed in record time.
Pflugerville's Adopt-A-Trail Service project is an awesome project that exemplies community spirit, service above self and how as Rotarians we make a difference! The Pflugerville club was joined by the American Legion Kerlin-Lyerly 154, Cele Middle School, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Connally High School Interact Club to help clean the Pflugerville Park this past weekend.
