The Rotary Club of Temple presented a $10,000 scholarship Thursday (June 9) to Jasmyne Joseph, a first-generation college-bound Belton High School senior.
Jasmyne was one of dozens of students for area high schools who participated in campus visits sponsored by the Rotary Club to either Temple College, Texas State Technical College (TSTC) or Tarleton State University. The Temple Rotary club requested a $10,797 grant from the Rotary District Assistance Program. The DAP grant paid for both the transportation and visits to the college campus as well as the scholarship. Students who participated in a campus visit were invited to apply for the scholarship. The cost for trips is deducted from the total of the grant received. Costs incurred include the transportation of the students to the higher education institutions, lunch for the students/advisors/chaperons.  The amount that remains is used for scholarships. To be eligible for a scholarship, the students must have attended the tours, applied to one of the three higher education institutions, and competed a scholarship application.  “We reach out to local high schools to invite first-generation college bound students whose social-economic circumstances may put them at risk of their secondary educational pursuits, to visit Temple College, TSTC and Tarleton State University,” said Temple Rotary President Rod Henry. “This initiative provides the students with the opportunity to see first-hand how affordable and accessible a higher education degree is.”Jasmyne, daughter of Veronica and Paul Joseph, said the college visit was instrumental in her decision. “I gained assurance that Tarleton State University is the school I want to attend the fall of 2022,” she said. She plans to pursue a degree in social work.
