The Killeen Rotary Club recently completed the construction of a paved bridge at the Killeen Municipal Court Garden and held a Ceremonial Ribbon Cutting on August 24, 2024. The Bell County Master Gardeners assist each Saturday with maintaining the community garden and many times have to drive through mud to get to the worksite.
The new paved bridge will eliminate that problem. The project was spearheaded by Rex Weaver and the Killeen Rotary Club collected donations from members, local businesses and community volunteers to fund for this project, which exceeded $14,000. The original idea of a community garden began with Rotarian, Judge Barbara Weaver in 2010. She observed that teen aged offenders relied on parents to pay their fines. She wanted a way to help the parents and have teens work off their fines. An arrangement was made between the City of Killeen, local business, community service clubs, KISD, and the Bell County Master Gardeners to build a community garden. This project is dedicated to helping teenagers learn about community service, gardening, and teamwork. The garden also serves as a butterfly habitat.
