On Tuesday, 13 May 2025, The Rotary Club of Flatonia and the Junior Class at Flatonia High School, who are taking U.S. History, spent a full day of touring and entertainment at The National Mounted Warrior Museum, located near Fort Cavazos (Hood) in Killeen, Texas. The morning began with guided tours by Fort Cavazos (Hood) servicemen and museum docents, throughout the museum, learning about the Army’s mounted cavalry from horses to motorcycles to tanks to helicopters.
. Past District 5870 Governor and Army Veteran Bob Crouch joined the club and students by interacting with the group and being a mentor. The tour also included a guided explanation to the shops that provide customized saddles, boots, and other necessary products, and to the stables that house their 30 horses. After a lunch of pizza and sodas, the students enjoyed, and had fun with, a scavenger hunt list to find items in the museum. Those who completed the hunt were given MRE’s (Meals Ready-to-Eat) as a prize. Pat Satterwhite, Rotarian coordinator for this Heritage Pride project, announced to the class that the Rotary Club of Flatonia was donating an 8”X8” customized brick to the museum in honor of their class, Flatonia High School Class of 2026, along with the FHS Bulldog logo. The brick will be placed in the sidewalk in the front entry to the National Mounted Warrior Museum. To commemorate their trip Flatonia Rotary also presented the students with key chains that depicted the Army Mounted Cavalry. It was an educational and inspirational day for the 34 students and 8 chaperones.
Flatonia Rotarian and Naval Aviator veteran, Bernie Satterwhite remarked, “Heritage Pride is a hands on project that the Flatonia Rotary Club sponsors annually to familiarize the students with U.S. Military operations. Why does this matter? Because, and it is with great pride, that we have the opportunity to nurture a better appreciation, to both students and adults, on the history of American activities to secure and maintain freedom in our country.”
