January is Mental Wellness Month, a time to focus on refreshing your mental health after the hectic period between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. Research shows a strong connection between the mind and body – your mental health significantly impacts your physical health.
So, how can you improve your mind-body connection?
First, establish emotional balance. It isn't realistic to expect that you will always be happy. We humans experience and learn from numerous emotions, both positive and negative. Emotional balance is being aware of and experiencing your feelings instead of bottling them up. You can achieve emotional balance by recognizing and accepting emotional changes. Work on identifying and naming your feelings. This allows you to respond to them proactively rather than reactively. Once you identify and name your emotions, you can practice mindfulness techniques like meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises. Practicing mindfulness is a key tool for achieving emotional balance.
Next, find your purpose. Finding your purpose can make you happier, extend your lifespan, improve your sleep and heart health, and many other benefits. Work on finding your purpose by exploring interests, volunteering, talking to friends and family, and trying new things. Finding a purpose equals finding a passion, which allows you to focus on the important stuff.
Finally, develop and maintain healthy habits. Eat healthy, exercise, get plenty of sleep, drink water, see your doctor for routine checkups, and develop stress management strategies.
Focusing on habits that improve your mind-body connection will make you happier, healthier, stronger, and more balanced.
