PFC Troy Pettit, his wife, and their one-year-old son recently enjoyed a relaxing weekend of rest and recreation in Austin thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Clubs of Austin and Killeen, along with the support of our local hospitality partners. For more than 15 years, Operation Vacation has been one of Rotary’s heartfelt ways of thanking military families serving at Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos) for their dedication and sacrifice. This month’s family was treated to a complimentary weekend stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown, complete with breakfast each morning.
Working together, the Rotary Club of Killeen coordinates with the military base to identify the honored family, welcomes them at a local Toyota dealership to pick up their rental vehicle, and provides gas money for the trip. Meanwhile, the Rotary Club of Austin arranges the hotel accommodations and prepares welcome backpacks filled with clothing, toys, games, snacks, drinks, and gift cards for local restaurants. Upon the family’s arrival in Austin, a Rotary member personally welcomes them, presents the backpacks, and helps them get settled into their weekend home away from home.
This family’s excitement was contagious—they had never traveled beyond the Killeen area and couldn’t wait to experience everything Austin has to offer. Seeing their joy was a wonderful reminder of the impact a simple weekend of hospitality can have. Operation Vacation continues to be a meaningful way for our clubs to express gratitude to the men and women who serve our country and to let their families know just how deeply their sacrifices are appreciated.
