The Rotary Club of Georgetown joined the McCoy Elementary School Student Council Friday, May 17, to dedicate a Peace Garden, which was designed by the students. Rotary Club President Jeff Cartledge thanked the students for their work to create an environment for peace on their campus.
McCoy Principal Dr. Emily Fraser told the students how proud she was of them. Rotarian Jim Deuser asked the children who helped create the garden to raise their hands and reminded them that they have built something that will benefit others. This is the seventh peace garden to be installed on a Georgetown Independent School District campus. More are scheduled to be installed next fall.
The Rotary Club of Georgetown, Texas, began its Peace Gardens project in 2022 with a District Assistance Program (DAP) grant. In keeping with Rotary’s commitment to “creating environments where peace can happen,” the Club’s Racial Unity and Peacebuilding Committee envisioned the building of peace gardens on the campuses of local schools. Working in partnership with the Georgetown Independent School District and its campuses, and with the support of Home Depot and the Sun City Texas Woodworkers Club, the Rotary Club of Georgetown is helping to establish peace gardens throughout our community.
