Membership remains Rotary’s top priority—and for good reason. Since 2010, Rotary’s global membership has stayed around 1.2 million. Each year, about 150,000 new members join, but sadly, we lose roughly the same number. In North America, the decline is even more evident: our share of worldwide membership has now fallen below 30% for the first time in Rotary’s history.
District 5870 reflects that trend. Since July 1, 2021, we have experienced a net loss of 290 members. If that pace continues—losing an average of 73 members each year—we could fall below 1,200 members within the next decade. At that point, Rotary International might consider dissolving District 5870 and reassigning our clubs. That’s a future we cannot allow.
New District Initiatives
To reverse this trend, your District Membership Committee is launching three major initiatives this year:
1. Strategic Membership Advisors (SMAs): Each SMA acts as your club’s primary resource for increasing membership and maintaining retention. They’re here to assist your club in attracting new members, reducing attrition, and enhancing the overall experience.
2. Monthly Membership Zoom Meetings: Held on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m., these sessions share practical ideas for recruiting, retaining, and engaging members. Although intended for Club Membership Chairs and Presidents, all Rotarians are welcome.
3. Enhanced Membership Toolkit: A new and improved toolkit is being created on the District 5870 website. This resource—still a work in progress—will offer clubs practical guides, templates, and best practices to boost membership efforts.
If your club needs support in any of these areas, please reach out—I’ll connect you with your SMA or share the Zoom details.
Testing the “Secret Sauce”
As District Membership Chair, I’m lucky to try out strategies in my own club before recommending them to others. Thanks to Rotary Club of Killeen Heights President Dan Ady and Membership Chair Becky Isbell, we’ve tested several approaches with promising results.
By October 1, our club will have welcomed eight new members with zero losses—a net gain of +8—and four more prospective members are currently in the process. Meeting attendance is increasing, satellite club and social event participation is rising, and more than 50% of our members have already taken part in at least one service project this year.
So, what’s the “Secret Sauce”?

Ten Ingredients for Membership Success

1. Impactful Service Projects – Provide a variety of service opportunities across Rotary’s seven areas of focus. Service remains our strongest attraction—this year, Killeen Heights has completed 10 projects, totaling nearly 400 service hours, and engaged over 30 non-Rotarians along the way.
2. Share Your Club’s Story – Go beyond Facebook. Use platforms like TikTok or Meetup to showcase your impact to the community.
3. Be Invitational – Most people join Rotary because someone asked them. Think of three people you know who would be great Rotarians—and invite them.
4. Radical Hospitality – Ensure every guest, new member, and long-time member feels like the most important person in the room.
5. Prospective Member Orientation – Help candidates understand Rotary’s values, expectations, and opportunities before they begin the application process to ensure a good fit.
6. Celebrate Inductions – Make new member ceremonies memorable. Joining Rotary should feel like a milestone, not just an item on the agenda.
7. Strong Programs – Feature a variety of Rotary topics, community updates, and engaging subjects such as hobbies, sports, and entertainment.
8. Fun Meetings – Maintain high energy, occasionally change the agenda, and ensure meetings are enjoyable.
9. New Member Engagement Plans – Collaborate with new members to set personal goals for their first year, ensuring they stay involved and grow in their knowledge of Rotary.
10. Active Sponsorship and Mentorship – Sponsors should mentor new members like a big brother or sister, encouraging connection and development.
The Bottom Line

These strategies aren’t just theory—they’re proven to work right now in the Rotary Club of Killeen Heights, and they will work for your club too. If your club applies them, you'll see results in both attraction and retention.
