The continuing projects included: 1. The Ramon Mario Bahena Rodriguez grade school which has a soccer field, cafeteria room and a computer lab due to contributions by the two clubs; 2. The Tuberculosis Center built by the state of Tamaulipas but equipped by a 4 H Rotary grant and sustained by a recent gift of 10 computers (to replace old computers); The Psychiatric Clinic which has received equipment but needs more. Each year members of the University Rotary Club and the Club Rotario Reynosa visit these projects.
We toured the new modern state of the art health clinic being built by the state. It is is next to the tuberculosis center. While it’s not a Rotary project, our tuberculosis center staff will be able to utilize it in many ways.
Our last project stop was a middle school which tugged at our heart strings. The buildings with potential classrooms were little more than sheds needing roof repairs as well as other repairs and windows. The rooms had no windows, no air conditioning and no heat. Some students were studying outside under a tree. They were studying ethics with a discussion about respect and honesty while we were there. This school is a project of the Reynosa Rotary Club. The University Rotary Club will likely participate in helping make this school better.
As always the group ended the visit with a delicious lunch provided by the Club Rotario Reynosa. Mexican hospitality can not be beat.
A question often asked by club members: Is it dangerous to go to Mexico? My answer: “It’s dangerous everywhere.” I feel safe though in the hands of our brother club members in Reynosa. These annual trips are open to all members of our club and other clubs too.
