The 9/11 Day of Service was a tremendous success! Our Service Chair, Cat Phelps, coordinated with The Georgetown Project and the Georgetown Ministerial Alliance to host this day of city-wide community service. The Rotary Club of Georgetown hosted 3 out of 16 service opportunities. drawing nearly 80 volunteers!
The Field of Honor® Project put nearly 60 volunteers to task, inspecting 1175 flags in 2 1/2 hours - ahead of the upcoming Field of Honor®, November 8 - 16! Our gratitude to all who served to ensure that our flags are fit to fly and honor our military and first responder heroes!
The flags inspected by 2-person teams, then sorted. Some needed washing. Others needed minor repairs. Most were good to fly with replaced white o-rings to hold the flags in place. A few will needed to be honorably retired in ceremony at the 9th annual Field of Honor®.
The Peace Garden restoration at Purl Elementary was Project no 2. It was led by volunteers from the Rotoract Club at Southwestern University as well as SU Rotarians Ron Swain, Mary Claire Angle and Georgianne Hewitt. A half dozen other Rotarians pitched in to beautifully renew the garden, offering students, staff, families a serene space to reflect, learn, and celebrate peace.
Nearly a dozen volunteers dove into Rotary Project no. 3: folding origami doves! The doves were utilized at the “Creating Environments for Peace Summit”, A Rotary District 5870 co-sponored event with the Rotary Club of Georgetown, scheduled for September 20 at Southwestern University.
