I ended the day completely exhausted… and completely inspired. What began as a bold idea from District Governor Todd Smith - to create one day of service that would touch all seven areas of focus - turned into something truly extraordinary in Cozumel. View Photos
Over the past few weeks, Rotarians came together across borders to bring this vision to life. District 5870 Rotarians from the United States, alongside the Rotary Club of Cozumel in Mexico, worked hand in hand to create a full day of service that touched all seven areas of focus.
What could have been a short, simple project became something far greater.
Our District 5870 Rotarians showed up in every way possible. Some assembled kits onboard the cruise ship. Others stepped in on the ground, ready to serve wherever needed.
And what made it even more meaningful… many chose to spend their day in Cozumel not exploring the island as visitors, but serving as Rotarians. They traded a day of leisure for a day of impact… and in doing so, became part of something far greater than themselves.
The Rotary Club of Cozumel led locally with heart, coordination, and an incredible commitment to their community.
Together, they didn’t just participate… they created something meaningful.
Of course, no meaningful project comes without a few unexpected twists.
At one point, there was real concern when supplies brought onboard were flagged, leaving many unsure if they would make it into the hands of those who needed them. And that is when something special happened.
A Rotarian from another district stepped up, making multiple trips to ensure those supplies reached the people they were intended for. It was a simple act, but a powerful reminder that Rotary is not defined by district lines… it is defined by people willing to act when it matters most.
And because of that, those items made it where they were meant to go.
But beyond the logistics, the kits, the wheelchairs, and the projects themselves, something even more powerful was happening.
Connections were built. Barriers faded. A shared purpose took center stage.
Throughout the day, I reminded our members of something important. The impact they were seeing was made possible through the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund SHARE… contributions made by Rotarians three years ago that returned to the district to fund projects like this one.
In that moment, they were not just volunteers.
They were part of the full cycle of impact.
Even with a few challenges along the way, it was an incredible day. And for the items still waiting to be distributed, the story is not over. It will continue through future visits, presentations, and ongoing connections in the community.
As I stood there at the end of the day, watching the cruise ship sail away, feeling the weight of everything that had just happened and the joy of what had been accomplished, one thing was clear.
I have never been more proud to be part of District 5870… and to be part of Rotary.
