JULY 2019 EDITION
News Around The District
DG Jim Henry's July Message
When PDG Bruce Golden called me back in February 2017 to let me know I was the District Governor Designee I was thrilled.  I also thought to myself, July 1, 2019 is a long way away.  Well, it wasn’t that far away because we are here now.  A new Rotary year is underway.  My training as well as the training for all District and Club officers is over.  I was able to accompany PDG Jerry Chapman on over 80% of his club visits and met many of you at that time.  I am really looking forward to my visit to all of the clubs and meeting with as many of you as possible.  I am so excited for the year ahead and the things that we can accomplish.

The Rotary Club of Killeen Heights (RCKH) completed their community garden project on June 1, 2019. Funded by the largest DAP Grant awarded ($25,433) in the history of District 5870, the Club worked on the garden for six months; an average of 20 volunteer participants contributed 3-4 hours each during the Club’s designated service days.

The project successfully integrated five of Rotary’s six Areas of Service: Peace and conflict prevention/resolution; Disease prevention and treatment; Maternal and child health; Basic education and literacy; and Economic and community development.

Rotary Club of Austin Builds a Habitat House
Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Austin gathered to help build two new houses for very deserving families.  Sharing valuable time on two different days, the Rotarians invested their ’service above self’ spirit and goodness while enduring our C. Tx. heat and humidity…ouch!  Board member, Andy Swanson, spearheaded this project and gets double kudos for the sweat equity.  Way to go Rotarians!
Rotary Club of Temple's Youth Service Club
Rotary Club of Temple is a proud sponsor of the Lakewood Elementary Service Club since 2010. They come to the Temple Rotary meeting every May to actually run the meeting and to present a program on what their club has done.  This year as their international project they raised funds for Shelter Box.  An amazing group of young people! Great job!!

Rotary Christmas in May
Its Rotary Christmas in May for children on these islands and main street as the Lakeway/Lake Travis and Mattamorris Industrial Rotary Clubs gave away 17 bicycles. Why, because these kids have a long walk to school each day..and..every kid needs a bike. These are families of local fishermen who cant afford the luxury of a kids bike. Rotary is here to help. This is the 10th year in a row for this project.
