DG Jerry Chapman July 2018 Update
Happy New Rotary Year

Wow!  A new Rotary year is underway. It started off on a good note with a very successful RYLA camp. One hundred teenagers came from all corners of our district. New friendships were made. Campers learned about service and inclusiveness. There was some work and lots of fun.
Rotary is the only organization that changes leadership annually at all levels; from the Rotary International President to the Club President. For me, the journey to serve as your governor started two years ago. There has been a lot of preparation. I’ve met many of you during club visits along with Rotarians around the world.

Meet Caroline Hackett, 2018-19 Rotary Global Grant Scholar

Caroline received her bachelor's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Virginia, where she specialized in Water Resources. While at UVA, she worked on a student-led water and health project in the rural Limpopo Province of South Africa that established a factory to produce ceramic water filters, a cheap but effective point-of-use treatment.

June Operation Vacation
The Rotary Clubs of Austin and Killeen had the great pleasure of hosting the cutest little military family from Ft. Hood in June @ the Intercontinental Stephen F. Austin Hotel in downtown Austin. !st Sgt. Casey Brinkley, his wife Heather, daughter Aubrey (3) and their new twins Willie Ray & JoLee (5 weeks old) arrived Friday just in time for dinner  and were greeted by Mary Reynolds, the chair of Operation Vacation for both the Rotary Club of Austin and the Board of the Austin Hotel Lodging Association.

Clean Water For Healthy Families
It stared with a trickle as great rivers often do; as great hopes do, as great  plans do; as great movements do; as great changes in lives and communities around the world do.

Yes, Rotary started in Chicago with just a trickle of four men meeting in an office.  And it grew into a great river of 1.2 million members that circle the globe making great changes.

LImited Time Offer
For a number of years, the Jerry Johnson Trust has been asked if there is any way that the Trust can match contributions made by Rotarians who are already a Paul Harris Fellow. While doing that falls outside of the scope of Jerry’s trust, we heard you loud and clear. So, for a limited time starting on August 1, 2018, the Trustees will do the following:

The Jerry Johnson Testamentary Trust Match Program

The Jerry Johnson Trust Match

District 5870 has a unique method to help you become an initial (first-time) Paul Harris Fellow. Over the past seven years, 1,292 Rotarians in 77 different clubs have taken advantage of this program, resulting in 655 PHFs. We hope to be able to help you, too.

The Jerry Johnson Testamentary Trust (the "Trust") will generally match contributions of new cash made during the current Rotary year to the Annual Fund-SHARE on a 1-to-1 basis in amounts of $100 to $500 for any active Rotarian in District 5870 who is not yet a first time Paul Harris Fellow.

Polio Plus Update
Rotary is committed to raise $50 Million (including Rotarian, public, and DDF donations) to be matched by $100 mil from the Gates Foundation - for each of the next three years - for a total of $450 million for the Global Polio Eradication effort.  And we did it this year!  In the 2017-18 Rotary Year, we reached slightly over $50 Million!
