DG Jerry Chapman's May Message
Wow!  District 5870’s Annual Conference of Rotary Clubs
Over 150 Rotarians gathered for the district conference May 3-5 for a fun and event filled weekend. They were not disappointed.   Friday evening, we gathered for a Rise Against Hunger meal packaging project. In less than two hours we had packaged 10,152 meal packages.  These bags of rice and soy represent the hopes and dreams of people worldwide who experience hunger daily.

Taylor Rotary Adds Fountain To Local Park

Anyone driving past Murphy Park or Bull Branch Park at night will see lights shining on brand new fountains courtesy of the Taylor Rotary Club. "This is Rotary's gift to Taylor," said Dennis Ritcher.

Service Above Self Award
Congratulations to PDG Rich Kaye, 2019 recipient of Rotary’s highest award, the Service Above Self award! No one deserves this recognition more!!
Rotary Foundation District Service Award
The District Service Award was created to recognize Rotarians’ efforts to serve humanity and work toward world understanding and peace through Rotary Foundation programs. A District Governor may award up to 20 recipients in a year. This year eight Rotarians were selected to receive the Rotary Foundation District Service Award. The award can only be presented once to a Rotarian.
 
These Rotarians have made a commitment of their time and efforts over a sustained period in support of Rotary Foundation programs; Polio Plus, Annual Fund, and the Rotary Grant Programs.

Pflugerville Making A Difference
 
On April 17, 2019 the Rotary Club of Pflugerville members gathered with our amazing sponsors and members of the Pflugerville community to award $35,000 in scholarships to 15 deserving PfISD High School Seniors!

Inter-Club Cooperation
The Rotary Club of Austin University Area board voted in early April 2019, to send money earned from participating in the Lakeway club car drawing ticket sales in 2017 and 2018 to Club Rotario Reynosa. This is an effort to replace the original computers for the TB Center.The money is earmarked for purchase and installation of 10 used computers for the Reynosa Tuberculosis Center.

The Marble Falls Daybreak Rotary has long supported the Boys and Girls club of Marble Falls. Recently Daybreakers built a Gaga Pit for the Boys and Girls club.

Community Garden to Help Local Neighborhood Grow

About 60 volunteers representing local organizations came together on April 27th on what used to be a vacant field behind the Food Care Center in downtown Killeen. 

Now, visitors to the location will find 16 cement, 4-foot by eight-foot plots lined neatly together, eight with plants sprouting through the soil in a community garden.

BookSpring Storybook Heroes Luncheon
 
The Rotary Club of Austin members sponsored tables for BookSpring’s Storybook  Heroes luncheon fundraiser Friday at the Renaissance Austin Hotel.  We had some special guests at our table -Federal Judge Lee Yeakel, Justice of the Peace Sylvia Holmes, Rotary District Governor Jerry Chapman, Dawson Principal Tania Jedele, Hart Principal Sonia Tosh, Pecan  Springs Reading Specialist  Malia Jackson -just to name a few. BookSpring honored one of our own Rotarians as their Hero, Dr. Fred Hansen of the University Rotary Club. Bookspring raised over $85000 for their literacy program that gets books in the hands of children.  Thanks to all who attended.  Mary Reynolds VP of Community Service for Rotary Club of Austin.

This month, the Rotary Club of Saipan welcomed two visiting Rotarians: Dr. Lily Muldoon of San Francisco Rotary Club and Rob Glass, founding chair of the Rotary Club of Corsicana of District 5870 Central Texas.
